Chris Hemsworth, Alzheimer’s and the APOE4 gene

Chris Hemsworth, Alzheimer’s and the APOE4 gene

Full Name

27 November 2022 at 22:00:00

In the news this week….

Chris Hemsworth announced that a genetic test revealed he has two copies of the ApoE4 gene, which increases his chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

So what does this actually mean?

The ApoE4 gene is considered to be the most important genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. However, it is important to be aware that carrying this gene does not guarantee a person will develop Alzheimer’s; it only indicates that they are more likely than the majority of other people to develop it at some stage in their lives. 25% of people carry one copy of ApoE4, and 2-3% of people carry two copies. Chris Hemsworth falls into the latter category, meaning that he inherited a copy of the ApoE4 gene from each of his parents. While it may feel devastating to receive such news, it’s extremely important to be aware that this genetic test is not a diagnosis; it only indicates that Chris Hemsworth has a higher chance of developing the condition at some point in his life than most people. Having this insight into his genetic disease risk will enable him to make informed decisions about his health and lifestyle, and he can employ available preventative measures to help reduce his disease risk.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Chris Hemsworth talks about his ApoE4 finding as a “blessing”, stating that he can now “begin taking steps to manage the risk, maintain physical and mental health, and perhaps stave off the development of the disorder for as long as possible”
